The US's Jobless Men

MAY 5, 2011

FUBar is on a less-regular summer schedule now, but returns today with an article from The Economist on what the article calls one of America’s biggest economic problems: the decline in work among men. The article presents data that indicates the impact of this post-recession phenomenon is decreasing in men's education level - some 35% of male high-school dropouts aged 25-54 in the US are not working. A veritable blizzard of policy suggestions to ameliorate the problem are delineated in the article. Meanwhile, Michael Parkin suggests that Goldin and Katz, The Race Between Education and Technology (Harvard University Press), might be worth a look for a longer term perspective on this phenomenon.
